Christened as
Sandwich Island in
1774 by Captain Cook,
it is the most visited
island in the group due
to its international
airport. Efate (or
Vate) extends over
approximately 1000 km2
and has undergone a
rapid development over
the past few years. |

Port Vila, the
capital city
Port Vila, the capital city of Vanuatu, projects the
image of a very cosmopolitan town with its mixture of
European, Vietnamese, Chinese and Melanesian cultures.
The people live mostly in and around Port Vila, and in
the little villages scattered all along the coast.
Most of the commercial life is in the main street (Lini
Highway), with duty-free shops, coffee shops,
restaurants, fashion boutiques, travel agencies, banks…
The Holiday Inn and Le Lagon also offer a similar range
of watersports, plus tennis and golf, and organise theme
nights (Melanesian, Italian feasts, etc. enquire while
you are staying there).

Not to be missed, the big market on most mornings.
The Cultural Centre, which includes a well stocked library
and a museum with a vast collection of Melanesian and
Pacific art and artifacts and the
Courthouse. Then there is the Michoutouchkine & Pilioko
Foundation, a few kilometres outside town along the road to
Pango Village, where you can
admire the array of rare and precious Melanesian artwork,
Paul Gardissat's wonderful display of bougainvillae.
Take advantage of being on holiday to get back into shape
and keep fit: the Cercle Sportif (Tel.: 22437) located next
to the Municipal Stadium offers
body-building exercises, aerobics, step lessons and yoga
sessions; the Tennis and Squash Club provides equipment for
hire. Also available a bar with pool table.
