Main attractions
Hideaway Island offers a variety of water
sports, fishing, glass-bottom boat tours, diving, and a
world's only post office. Vanuatu Post has reated an
official Post Office with a difference. It is the world's
only Underwater Post Ofice. Situated within the Hideaway
Island marine sanctuary, the Post Office sits in around 3
metres of water and both divers and snorkellers are able to
post special "waterproof postcards".
Hideaway and Erakor Islands, where you can either snorkel or
simply relax on the beach and spend a quiet day (both have
restaurant and bar facilities).
Iririki Island also has a water sports club, including
windsurfing, dinghy sailing, watercyles, water-skiing,
jet-skiing and the resort includes bungalows, swimming pool,
bar and restaurant.
Le Meridien and Le Lagon also offer a similar range of
watersports, plus tennis and golf, and organise theme nights
(Melanesian, Italian feasts,
etc. enquire while
you are staying there).
Not to be missed, the big market on most mornings.
The Cultural Centre, which includes a well stocked library
and a museum with a vast collection of Melanesian and
Pacific art and artifacts and the Courthouse.Then there is
the Michoutouchkine & Pilioko Foundation, a few kilometres
outside town along the road to Pango Village, where you can
admire the array of rare and precious Melanesian artwork,
Paul Gardissat's wonderful display of bougainvillae.
Take advantage of being on holiday to get back into shape
and keep fit : the Cercle Sportif (Tel.: 27177) located next
to the Municipal Stadium offers body-building exercises,
aerobics, step lessons and yoga sessions; the Tennis and
Squash Club (Tel.: 22437) provides equipment for hire. Also
available a bar with pool table.
Vate / Efate
After driving along the Mele Golf grounds, you can bear off
towards the Mele Cascades (small charge payable). If you
continue on your way, you will come to Havannah Harbour and
Samoa Point (beautiful beach). Lelepa and Moso Islands are
well worth checking out; or you can go across on a charter.
On the northern coastline, Nagar Restaurant and Beachcomber
at Takara offer good food and bungalow accommodation, with
an opportunity to visit neighbouring islands, such as Kakula
which has a beautiful white sandy beach, Nguna and its
ancient volcano, to name but a few.
Further round, making your way back towards town, you
will come across a lovely beach at Ebule, where you can
wander up the river in a canoe, watch
traditional dancing and taste Melanesian food.
Further on lies Forari, an old manganese mining site. What
used to be almost a township with over 2,000 people and the
second main centre of activities on Efate between 1962 and
1978, has now become a private property.
After Manuro Paradise Point you come to beautiful Eton beach.
On the way back don't forget Blue Water Island Resort and
their aquarium with sharks and turtles. Good swimming with
restaurant. Few kilometres after, you can stop on the
beautiful beach of White Sand in front of the 18 hole golf
course.
1 km after, Tamanu Beach Club well known for its lovely
setting and hospitable atmosphere.
