Climate and vegetation
Climate
Tropical
climate with a cooler season between May and October
during which you can enjoy some lovely sunny days, and a
wet season, hot and humid, from November to April, with
temperatures up to 30°C, also known as the “Cyclone
Season”.
The temperature of the sea remains pleasant throughout,
varying between 22° and 28°, so you can enjoy a swim all
the year round, whatever the season.
Vegetation
Nowadays we are faced with a great variety of species of
trees and plants of all kinds. The vegetation changes
from the coast to the deep interior of the islands.
Close to the sea you can find among the more common
species, mangroves, coconut trees, casuerina, pandanus,
burao, namele, to quote but a few.
Endemic world
As you move inland, the vegetation becomes lush and
dense with melektrees, kauris, banyan trees, fern trees,
wild orchids, vines, etc.
growing in profusion. This is the primary forest, or
rainforest, very old and still untouched, the home of
numerous plants and animals which have evolved their own
species and that is why there is a large number of
insects, birds and plants which are endemic to Vanuatu.
Gradually, the people have been clearing these age-old
forests to expand their
villages, establish gardens and plantations, and of
course, to harvest the timber.
In many areas, the vegetation has grown back, forming a
secondary growth or “bush”.
There are any number of fruit trees, mangoes,
pawpaws,
bananas, oranges, lemons, limes. Give yourself a treat
and go to the market early one morning... you will find
a wealth of products in addition to these, such as
pineapples, watermelons, soursop, raspberries, and also
all manner of vegetables and flowers. Everywhere your
eyes will feast on the colourful hibiscus and
bougainvillae, frangipani, flame-trees and many more
blooms, trees and plants.
