Agriculture and associated exports,
together with tourism and the financial centre, are the
mainstay of the economy. |
Agriculture is beginning to diversify, with cocoa,
coffee, kava, pepper, squash, hides, etc., but the primary
resource of the country is still copra. Nevertheless, the
economy also relies to a growing extent on the export of
beef and fish.
The export of beef and fish
Timber logging operations, insofar as they are managed
properly (unfortunately, this is seldom the case), are a
substantial source of income.
Two abattoirs are established in the country, togeher with
some light industries such as the manufacture of beverages,
ice-creams, garments, furniture, soap
products, etc.
With an average visitor rate around 50 000 tourists the
majority of visitors come from Australia, New zealand and
Caledonia.
